What’s SQL Diagnostic Manager?
SQL Diagnostic Manager is the leading performance monitoring, alerting and diagnostics solution for SQL Server and Azure professionals. It proactively notifies of health, performance, and availability problems via a desktop console or a mobile compatible web console. It minimizes costly server downtime with agent-less, real-time monitoring and customizable alerting for quick diagnosis and remediation.
What’s New in Diagnostic Manager 13.0?
SQL Diagnostic Manager 13.0 introduces integration with Microsoft Entra ID authentication for monitoring services for Azure SQL and SQL Server 2022. Azure SQL is the rapidly growing family of cloud database services from Microsoft Azure that are fully managed. It includes Azure Single Database, Azure Elastic Pool, and Azure Managed Instance. Entra ID authentication capability will provide several benefits to customers using SQL Diagnostic Manager to monitor Azure SQL environments including:
- Empowers the existing Azure Discovery feature within SQL DM by removing the need to manually enter credentials for each resource
- Exploits existing Azure Profile feature of SQL DM. Any Azure Profiles that are already in place for defining Azure Custom Counters or for discovery of Azure resources can be re-used as credentials for authentication for collection accounts. Using Entra ID is just a matter of mapping existing Azure Profiles to databases, instances, or elastic pools
- Facilitates adding large numbers of Azure resources with shared Entra ID credentials
- Use more secure connections to Azure SQL than SQL Server authentication
